Valentine’s Day is a holiday about love, that everyone loves; some of us love to hate it and there are those of us that genuinely love it. When you’re in grade school, it’s a happy time of cards, cupcakes, and candy.

As you get older and it stops being “mandatory” to play nice and treat everyone as equals, Valentine’s Day becomes a battleground between the “haves” and the “have nots”…as in those that have Valentines and those who don’t.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Tyler Durden is extremely pissed off as America’s one true love, consumerism, finds Hallmark millions of dollars richer.

Whether you’re single or going steady, love is all around you; you just need to choose to allow and acknowledge it. If you have a steady, you can spice up your love life and rekindle the romance by taking it back to the basics. If you’re single, you may find yourself with a new date or two after your newly adjusted attitude. (No one wants to go on a date with Debbie Downer or Bitter Ben!) But it’s not even about scoring date. It’s about being the glorious being of love that you are.

  1. Valentine’s Day is a reminder to be kinder to ourselves & others. What are some ways you can be kinder to yourself? To others? Put them into practice and GIVE FREELY!
  2. You don’t need a romantic partner to have a love life. You can have a rich love life with yourself, your family, your friends, and or even your pet. Don’t forget to love and appreciate them. Your partner should not be the sole recipient of your affections. In fact, relationships in which a partner is put on a pedestal seldom last. Practice keeping your partner as your equal.
  3. If Cupid is your homeboy and others aren’t fond of him, it costs you nothing to pay them no mind. In fact, send love to the naysayers. Remember that they may be putting up a guard or a defense mechanism to protect themselves and it has nothing to do with you.
  4. Love everyone, all the time. Even if they get on your nerves or rain on your parade. Rain can make for excellent ambiance, if you know what I mean.
  5. Concentrate on making every moment special, every day. One day a year cannot save a relationship. But in that one day, there are 24 hours with 60 minutes each, for a total of 1,440 minutes a day. That’s potential for 1,440 special moments.  There are 365 days a year, each with 1,440 minutes of potential, for a total of 525,600 minutes. That’s 525,600 chances for special moments! Squeeze them in and find the time. A minute here and a minute there will go a long way, baby!
  6. Relationships are mirrors. What we dislike in others are often traits we need to work on within ourselves. Instead of calling your partner out on his/her annoying habits, direct the focus inwards.   Spend less time criticizing and more time loving.
  7. Gratitude is the attitude. Energy flows where awareness goes. What we resist persists. What we focus on flourishes. Choose things that feel good. (I read a story about a woman who trained her husband with positive reinforcement, ie, only acknowledging the behaviors she wanted to see more of. She learned this from a dog training manual, by the way.)
  8. Allow yourself to receive all of the love and support around you! It’s okay. You DESERVE IT, simply because you are here! A lot of us, particularly women, have this difficulty in allowing others to do for us. We don’t know how to simply receive, because we are so caught up in wanting to take care of others. If this is you, go back to step 7 — Gratitude is the attitude. Simply receive with an attitude of gratitude. Sometimes is smiling and saying “Thank you” is all that’s required of you.

There is nothing wrong with love or being in love. And there’s nothing wrong with Valentine’s Day. It is us who chooses not to receive the love that’s in abundance all around us. We can choose differently. Bring the love back into life and bring life back into love!

Seven Simple Ways to Maximize Your Time

As a mom and an entrepreneur, chances are there’s probably just never enough time in the day.  When it’s mid-day and your house is a wreck, your to-do list is long, and your toddler is covered in this morning’s breakfast, it’s hard to fathom that we have the same 24 hours in a day that Beyonce and Oprah have.  We can’t create time…but we can free some up.  Here’s how.

Identify your time-wasters.  Make a list.

You’d be really surprised at how much time you spend mindlessly scrolling through social media or watching cat videos when you should be working or doing something otherwise productive.  Review how you spend your days (how you actually spend your time; not how you want to) and write down what you usually do when you’re procrastinating or otherwise wasting time.  The next time you find yourself googling random junk or watching your 100th Instagram story, you’ll know it’s time to log off and get productive.

Hide or delete apps if you need to.

If it’s just too tempting, hit delete.  You can always reinstall Twitter after you’ve hit your deadlines and accomplished whatever goals you had set for yourself for the day.

Schedule appointments, create an agenda, and stick with it.

There’s no need for what can be done in 20 minutes to take an hour.  Schedule your meetings with hard start and stop times, and stick to it.  Make an agenda so that you can keep your meeting on track, and again, stick with it.  You’ll be surprised at how much time you can shave off meetings and appointments when you stick to the script.  The people you’re meeting with will appreciate your stellar time management skills as well.

Prioritize your priorities — start with your most vital tasks first.

It may be tempting to see how many small tasks you can knock out in a big block of time, but once you’ve finished all the small stuff, you may be out of energy and balking at the idea of tackling a larger, more energy intensive task when all you want to do is wind down.  Start the exhausting stuff first, get it out of the way, and go from there.

Set strict boundaries with your time.

Just because you’re a business owner doesn’t mean you need to be available to everyone 24/7.  It’s counterintuitive, we know…but the reality of the situation is that the work will still be there for you to do in an hour, two hours, or tomorrow.  As long as you’re courteous to your clients and handling your business, there’s no harm in not being at someone’s beck and call 24/7.  Isn’t that why you became your own boss to begin with?   If you stop for every interruption that comes your way, you’ll never be able to focus on getting your work done.  Seriously, no one expects you to have a five minute response time at 2 am.  Set up “office hours” where people know they can expect you to be available — otherwise, set an appointment.

Use your waiting time wisely.

Waiting in the doctor’s office?  On hold listening to elevator music?  Got an extra 10 minutes before your next meeting?  That’s more than enough time to shoot a few emails, listen to your voicemail, or read a few pages of a book.  Instead of scrolling through the same 10 posts on Facebook, take advantage of the extra few minutes.

Listen to audiobooks while commuting.

Most of us spend a lot of time in our cars.  This is a great opportunity to pop in an audiobook and catch up on some reading — or rather, listening.  Bonus points if it’s educational material.

Watch: Why You, An Adult, Should Prioritize Play

Think back to when you were a little kid, way before the Internet, iPads, and social media.  Back when floppy disks were actually floppy and we played outside until the street lights came on; when the best toy we had was our imagination.

Do you remember any of the games you played or made up?  Or any of the things you imagined?

If you have kids, when you think of playtime now, it’s probably reserved exclusively for your kids.

Play is a powerful tool for creativity — but it’s not just for kids.  You need to play, too — especially if you want to become the kick-butt entrepreneur you dream of.

Why?  Because business, especially entrepreneurship, requires creativity.

When is the last time that you played, as an adult?

You probably don’t remember.

Five Things to Think About Before You Start a Business

A young mom recently joined our Facebook community and asked us some great questions about how she can become an entrepreneur and start her own business.  Like many, she wasn’t sure where or how to start.

Reaching out for clarity is great, because before starting a business, there are obviously a few things you should brainstorm.

We’ve come up with a few of the basics to help you mastermind your master plan.

What do you like doing?  Can you see yourself doing it every day?

There’s a saying that if you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.  This is vital, because if you’re going to have your own business, it should be something you’re obsessed with, not in love with.  Why?  As millionaire entrepreneur and best selling author of Be Obsessed or Be Average Grant Cardone said, “Getting hooked on the idea of success and actually being obsessed enough to pursue it are two completely different things. Just wanting to be great isn’t enough. I’ve shed sweat, blood, tears—and put my ass on the line more times than I can count—to get to where I am today.”

What do you not like doing?  What can you not do?  Start thinking about building your team.

Yes, you will need a team — even if it’s a small one.  Identify the tasks that you either don’t have the skills to complete, or just don’t want to complete.  Then figure out how to delegate them to someone who’s a rockstar.

What problem does my business or product solve?

Businesses exist for the sole reason of problem solving.  Find a problem and solve it.  This is inherently what will make your business valuable.

How much will it cost me to start?  How can I get started right away, with what I have right now?

Let’s say your ideal business is a clothing store.  Without some heavy capital, it may be hard to immediately open a brick and mortar storefront.  If you start online or at trade shows, with a small inventory, you can get started sooner and keep funneling funds back into your business so you can scale up as time goes on.  You don’t need to be the biggest and the baddest right away.  You just need to get started!

Who else is doing it, and what unique advantage do I offer?

Mark Cuban from Shark Tank calls this standout factor your “special sauce.”  Your special sauce is what makes you shine; it’s what sets you apart from your competitors.  Build your business around what makes your business unique.  Develop your marketing around your special sauce.  Your special sauce could be anything from your messaging, the type of experience you provide, a production method, charitable contributions, or where your product is produced.  Think about what you’re giving your customer, not what you’ll get.  Some key concepts to focus on are sustainability, ethically produced goods, community involvement, social responsibility and social consciousness.

#GlowUp2018: How to Make a Vision Board

Hey lovelies!  We’re back this week with a video on how to make your own vision board.

A vision board is a visual representation of your goals.  While writing your goals down is powerful, visualizing them is even more so!

Before you discount a vision board as a hippy dippy waste of time, keep in mind that athletes and other successful individuals use visualization all the time.  Visualization is the real deal, and science backs it.

Psychology Today reports that in one study,  weightlifters were able to activate the same patterns in their brain whether they were physically lifting hundreds of pounds or just visualizing it.

Other research has revealed that visualization practices are almost as effective as physical practice.  The same study found that engaging in both physical and mental practice is more effective than utilizing either method alone.

This is a great opportunity to get fancy and let your creativity shine.  Decorate your vision board with contact paper, use pretty push pins, rhinestone decorations, gold accents, washi tape, or whatever you think is aesthetically pleasing.

Develop These 10 Habits to Live Your Best Life

If you haven’t made any resolutions or set any goals for this year yet, you’ve still got plenty of time.

While “Go big or go home” sounds good, it’s small changes that will be the most sustainable, and thus have the most impact.

Sustainability allows for consistency, and it’s consistency — not will power — that will help you bring change.

We’ve made a list of some small, easy steps you can take to live your best life. (We also have a list of ways to make and keep your resolutions here.)

Read on to live your best life in 2018!

1. Start today, right now.

“Tomorrow” is a mythical, magical place where everything gets done. Unfortunately, “tomorrow” never comes more often than not. So seize the day, seize the moment, and get started.

The time is going to pass anyway, so get like Nike and just do it.

2. Do one radical act of self-care a week.

Celebrate yourself, just because! Whether it’s taking a class you love, getting a mani/pedi, indulging in a craving, watching a movie or a TV series, reading a book, or lighting some candles and taking a bath, get that “me time” in. Find a way to treat yourself at least once a week.

3. If it takes only a few minutes, do it now.

Procrastination is mad real. How many times do you put off simple five minute tasks like making phone calls, sending an email, or tidying something up? Similarly, if you have an extra five minutes, start a new task. You can always revisit it later.

4. Read for at least 30 minutes a day.

“Poor people have big TVs. Rich people have big libraries.” — Jim Rohn

Statistics show that the average CEO reads four to five books a month, which is four to five times more than the average person reads in a year. If you read 30 minutes a day, that’s 3.5 hours a week. You could read anywhere from 12 to 24 books a year at that rate, which is, at minimum, far greater than the four books a year the average person reads.

5. Pack lunches or cook more often than you eat out.

You’ll be in control of the ingredients, save calories, and save money. Winning!

6. Meditate for at least five minutes a day.

Meditation is a major key for living your best life. Besides the mental and physical benefits, meditation can also help teach you discipline. A disciplined mind can — and will — accomplish anything you set out to do.

7. Set a sleep schedule.

Sleep is important! Scientists say that our society is experiencing a “catastrophic” lack of sleep and it’s killing us by increasing our risks for potentially fatal diseases like heart disease, cancer, and strokes. And if that isn’t a reason to get more shut eye, we don’t know what is!

Try going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, to re-train your body to sleep.

8. Unplug & disconnect to reconnect with yourself and those around you.

In today’s day and age, we are constantly glued to our cell phones. We know; it’s addicting. If we invested the time we spend perusing social media out of boredom, habit, or entertainment in reading or learning a new skill, it would be incredibly easy to read more than thirty minutes a day or even learn a new language.

One of the biggest downfalls of being so plugged in is that we’re often tuned out. Set aside times and places that are a no-go zone for your phone, such as the dinner table, in bed, during date night, driving, the hour before bedtime, and family dinners.

Get the whole family in on the plan if you need to. These times are a gift, and we need to be fully present.

9. Make time to stretch daily.

Most of us sit for hours at a stretch, with little to no physical activity. Stretching keeps our muscles moving, increases circulation and blood flow, and can even increase our coordination. There are plenty of stretches you can do in the office or while you’re working.

10. Keep a journal.

If you’re like many, you probably kept a diary as a kid. Journaling isn’t just for kids — it’s beneficial for people of all ages. You can keep a food journal to help you reign in your eating habits, a gratitude journal to help maintain a positive mindset, or even a business journal/planner to help you map out and plan your business ideas and goals. The possibilities are endless!

How to Set & Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Happy 2018!  Now that it’s the new year, your newsfeeds have probably been flooded with “New year, new me” posts for a few days now.  It’s not exactly nice, but it’s understandable why we side-eye the heck out of people who have been using this caption for the past ten years:  Unfortunately, while millions of Americans make resolutions, research says only about 8% manage to keep them.

That statistic is rather depressing – but you don’t have to be a dismal statistic.  Here’s how to make (and keep!) your resolutions so you can make 2018 your best year yet.

Get specific and clearly define what it is you want to do.

The most popular resolutions involve self-improvement, money, and weight loss.  Luckily, those are all things that are easy to quantify.

Resolutions like “Save money,” “Lose weight,” “Get in shape,” and “Be a better a person,” are pretty much guaranteed to fail.  They’re extremely vague, and there’s no way to measure or track your progress.  You have to clearly define what it is you want to do; otherwise, how will you know how to get there and when you’ve made good on your resolution?   If we can’t measure our progress, it’s only natural to lose motivation after a while.

Set clear goals that are measurable.  What does it mean to you to save money, lose weight, get in shape, or be a better person?

Here are some common resolutions, rewritten clearly and specifically for success:

Get in shape.   =  Be able to run a mile in 10 minutes/Do half an hour of yoga each day/Run at least 5 miles a week/Take 10,000 steps per day.

Lose weight.   =  Lose 20 pounds/Lose X amount of inches from your body.

Get healthy.   =  Drink 8 glasses of water a day/Eat X amount of fruits and vegetables per day/Exercise X amounts of time per week/Meditate for X minutes per day/Lower cholesterol, blood sugar, whatever, by X points/Get X hours of sleep per night.

Save money.   =  Save X amount of dollars in savings/Pay off X amount of debt/Invest X amount of money in Bitcoin, Forex, Acorn, or whatever other kind of investments you want to make/Contribute X amount of dollars to your retirement account.    (Bonus: If you want some creative ways to create extra cash flow, check out our post on ways to make some extra moolah here.)

Be real with yourself.

Let’s be honest.  If you’re currently pulling in $25k a year, setting a goal to save $10,000 in a year is probably unrealistic.  If you need to lose 100 pounds, a year may not be enough time for you to do so in a healthy way.  Don’t set yourself up for failure – set small, attainable, achievable goals.

Once you see yourself progressing and achieving, it will create momentum and keep you motivated.  You can always set new goals and a higher bar for yourself once you accomplish what you’ve initially set out to do.

Start small to win big.

Break it down.

In order to reach our goals, we’ve got to take some kind of action.  Once you know where you want to go, it’s much easier to figure out how to get there.

How will you save $5,000, lose 20 pounds, run a mile in 10 minutes, or develop good habits to make yourself a better person?

Will you set aside 10% of every paycheck?  Will you start a home-based business to generate some extra money?  Will you change your eating habits and swap out chips for veggies and hummus?  Will you replace a meal with a protein shake or smoothie?  Will you exercise a certain amount of time per week?  Will you read self-help books and implement one new suggestion a month?

To develop sustainable habits, you need to think logically and practically. 

Don’t overwhelm yourself and try to do it all at once.  Work on implementing one small change at a time; once you’ve mastered that, slowly add in others.  This will keep you from getting burnt out, overwhelmed, and feeling like a failure.

For example, maybe you want to lose 20 pounds, and you’ve decided to accomplish that by a) exercising five times a week, b) drinking more water, and c) eating healthier, but you haven’t seen the inside of a gym since March 2017, and you regularly chomp down on chips and soda in the office.  Start by getting yourself to the gym once or twice a week, then swapping out your chips for nuts, veggies and hummus, or fruits.  Once you’ve got that down, you can start working in your protein shakes, increasing your gym days, and making more dietary changes, like swapping soda for fruit-infused sparkling water.

Track your progress.

It’s easy to lose motivation when you can’t measure your goals, because if you can’t measure your goals, you don’t see any progress, which is why most people end up losing steam and failing.  Since you’ve clearly defined your goals, now you can measure them!

As any psychology pro knows, if you can measure it, you can change it.

This will also allow you to identify any plateaus or backslides, so you can evaluate what the contributing factors and barriers were.  That way you can effectively problem solve and re-adjust your efforts as and where needed.

One of our favorite methods is creating a habit tracker in a journal.

Put it on your calendar.

Stuff that gets scheduled gets done.  When you hear people say they “don’t have time,” it really means “That’s not a priority for me right now.”  If you want to change, you have to make it a priority.  Change doesn’t happen by accident.  It happens with deliberate decisions.

 Set a schedule for yourself to declutter, review your budget weekly, meal plan and prep, exercise, read self-improvement books, or do whatever it is you need to do to hit your goals.

Show up for yourself the same way you show up to appointments with your boss, doctor, or friends.   

Build your tribe.

It’s much easier to make change when you have a stellar support system.  Tell your friends and family about your goals – they can help keep you on track.  A supportive friend that knows you’re trying to lose weight or save money isn’t going to invite you out to binge on pizza and or waste your money drinking at the bar multiple times a week.

You can even join a Facebook group for likeminded individuals, where you can exchange ideas, get support and pep talks when you’re feeling stuck, and celebrate your successes.

Focus on progress, not perfection.

All or nothing thinking is a trap.  It’s easy to say “Whoops, I ate chips today; the day is ruined, I’ll eat whatever I want for the rest of the day because I already screwed up.  I’ll start again tomorrow.”

No!  If you think like that, you’ll be stuck in a never-ending cycle of tomorrows.  If you fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up – be gentle with yourself, and get back on as soon as possibleSetbacks aren’t a barrier to success; they’re a part of success.





You don’t have to wait for “tomorrow” to start making better decisions that will get you where you want to go – every moment is a chance to change.  You don’t need to be perfect, because you can’t and you won’t be perfect.  Aim for being “pretty good” most of the time, and you’ll get where you want to go all of the time.


Treat yo self.

Instead of punishing yourself for straying off track, reward yourself for staying on track and accomplishing things, no matter how small.

Try not to use a reward system that will sabotage your goals – too often people will reward themselves for exercising or losing weight by eating junk food, or reward themselves for saving by splurging.  Instead, if you lost a few pounds, reward yourself with a new outfit.  If you’ve kept your gym schedule, treat yourself to a new pair of gym shoes or a class pass for something new you want to try, like belly dancing or salsa lessons.  If you’ve managed to save 10% of your income for a month, treat yourself by contributing an extra $20 to your savings, vacation fund, or investment account.
